Cathedral of theBlessed Virgin Mary

Rotokauri Residence

Pirongia Hillside Residence

Honouring Architecture

Three strikingly different projects have recently won a variety of awards.

Our design work for the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary won the Public Architecture category in the annual NZIA NZ Architectural Awards.

The judges were impressed by our sensitive design, remarking on the "clever use of the building's elevated site and of the projecting entrance portico further emphasise the impression of height, ensuring that this remains one of Hamilton's landmark buildings."

We also enjoyed success in the Residential Architecture category with a Pirongia hillside home. Nestled next to a native bush reserve, the simple structure frames spectacular views and a restrained choice of materials ensures attention is to the surrounding environment.

Last, but by no means least, a unique, intricately designed Rotokauri residence also won a Waikato - Bay of Plenty Residential Architecture award. Architect Geoff Lentz was responsible for the design that takes advantage of the site's position to connect twin pavilions, capturing all day sun and views. The result is a serene light-filled interior the judges described as "spreading gracefully across the site, taking full advantage of the space available and the stunning views on all sides." The house has since won a New Zealand Timber Design Award 2009, and to our delight won 11 of the 12 categories at July's Waikato Master Builder Awards, including the supreme award for builder Greg McGovern Construction Ltd.

Future focus: 'The Tron - Conversations on Placemaking'

Planning is underway for a series of talks in Hamilton later this year under the banner "The Tron - Conversations on Placemaking".

Talks will centre on themes of culture, landscape, architecture and urban space, and how they define the quality of city life. Prominent architect Ian Athfield, along with provocateur Tommy Honey and others, have been invited to lead the conversations.
